- I'm just curious what is a viable gay night?
I think that question comes up a lot here, with a lot of argument. But if you define a viable club as one where you go in with a smile and come out just as happy even if you have been clubbing for years and years and years and have seen it all before ... then I'm a fan of MACHO CITY, Disco Bloodbath, Horse Meat, Redlight, and obviously I would say Playtime and NO! (I work with both).

What I am going to be very interested to see, gay-wise, is whether the new Bar Rumba relaunch attracts many of the shoreditch / tbar queens back to Soho. The lineup across the next six weeks is amazing (Dinky, Terry, Roland Appel, Greg Wilson, Stephan Goldmann), the venue has a very solid sound system, and it's as central as it gets. We're the only specifically mixed night, but if secretsundaze can be 20% queer I don't see why the average night in Bar Rumba couldn't be...

and Dear Di.. it's definitely something to do with the drugs! Nice drugs.. not that messy G drugs which makes people go to the floor all the same, albeit in a different way

Dear Robse11,
"there was so much trouble and bodies littering the streets it had become a mess and was no longer atractive to me."
...me thinks nothing is very attractive to you, dear.
Miooow! :-D

And there was I thinking it might just be something to do with Drugs or is that possibly something we're not allowed to mention?

I did start my question by saying "excuse the ignorance" but thanks for filling me in P Pete! You're right; I've not been to Ibiza in years but will be seeing Todd Terry and Armand Van Helden play Paradise in Mykonos next week! So maybe catch up on international clubbing trends there.
And apologies to Andy S, I was just making a little joke at my own expense (hence the smiley) I promise (myself) to let it go...

Dear Pete, do not assume what we have or havnt done or have experienced. Ive been to Ibiza and to its clubs many times over the last 25 years and probably while you were in school. I have stopped going and the last visit was 3 years ago, there was so much trouble and bodies littering the streets it had become a mess and was no longer atractive to me.

have none of you guys been to an ibiza club?
the sitting thing.. let me explain:
everyone dancing to the 4 x 4beat.. then it breaks down!
then.. i do not know how it happens.. it's probably quite interesting to those who study social sciences.. but everyone sits down as the build up starts.. drums start rolling.. climax is a cumming.. then when the beat kicks back in everyone jumps up in unision!
it's very ibiza.
it's very euphoric!!
it tends to happen when the crowd is very up for it. it creates a sense of unity on the dancefloor. it's simple really.. but i tell you the rush is really good.
it stems from people really loving the music. it doesn't happen all night. it normally only happens once a night, too mant attempts and it ruins the effect.
if you don't understand it's possibly because (and i say this with much respect) you've never been to a decent club full of raved up loons off their head being really hedonistic and being really into the music. for me this is the essence of clubbing.
i'm not not rave-snob but maybe you should explore more to see it happening.
the link to the bottom video does not illustrate it properly. the main video that i took at the top of the post does illustrate it well. it is happening in that clip. take a proper look.
to return to the non happening in the bottom link: what actually happened is that the ravers did not know the tune and there seemed to be an endless break-down in the music.. the beat never really ever kicked back in. it is a risk of the sitting thing.
it happened again at the above party where i took the above clip later in the session..except the beat never really came in as expected and it was an anti-climax. oh well. you win some you lose some.
is there a Wikidepia entry about the sitting raving phenomena? i should maybe write one!

You boys are so boring.. You made your point(s) get over it!!
Posted by: Andy S | Tuesday, 02 September 2008 at 18:22
Maybe they were having a sit down protest at some tottally un-cool people that were caught singing along with the music !! Or maybe they had let sombody over 25 in, OMG perish the thought.....

Thought it might be some special dance involving sitting, as most of the people in the initial you tube clip are all copping a squat.
Thought I was out of the loop (we grown men from the RVT tend to stand when conducting our out-of-date singalongs :-)

Can I expose my ignorance and ask what a sentada is?
Posted by: Beartracker | Tuesday, 02 September 2008 at 09:02
Hey Princess Cranky!.. yeah it was quite a gay SS that last bank holiday, it's not a straight club, it's just a clubbers club.
I'm just curious what is a viable gay night? what nights did you mean? Are they the ones I think of? Still.. not much compares to Berghaim, Sonar, Panorama, Ibiza etc. Fabric might be good on a Saturday night. DJS there are amazing!
And DT.. I think you'll be safe. No one will be in the office to see you will they? I have to say that we were all looking up at the offices wondering if there was anyone working away inside watching all these ravers below dancing totally off their tits.
Oh.. and they're off their tits on MDMA and pills.. it's really really nice to not see any G casualties all night!

Pistolpete, I would have loved to have gone to this party, but Ewer St carpark is 20 yards away from my office, and I was worried that this confusing state of affairs would induce a panic attack (or worse, cause me to go into some "office trance" on the dancefloor) so instead I stayed at home and watched season 3 of Lost back to back.

Very few of the people surrounding that cameraman seem to be straight :)
That said, it's an, er, "intriguing" idea that anyone going to secretsundaze needs to be patted on the head by gays for being cool. These days there are finally some viable gay nights in London but I don't see even the best of them being invited to play at Bergheim or Sonar, as secretsundaze has been.

Many thanks Gavster
We don't need sad people around who say things like that.

Posted by: PJ | Monday, 01 September 2008 at 12:21
Poor punctuation, shoddy grammar and racism . . . oh dear! Looks like a normal DD thread to me. All we are missing is a bit of anti Orange sentiment?
Posted by: diskoboi | Monday, 01 September 2008 at 11:25
And not just racism either, really shocking spelling and grammar too!!!
Posted by: Pistolpete | Monday, 01 September 2008 at 10:47
Nice line in Racism on this thread to go with the ageism on the RVT thread...
